HERBIG IDEA is a creative studio comprised of WHITNEY LYLE and SAM HERBIG. Whitney is a designer who loves to create books, packaging, and do more crafty projects in her spare time. Sam is a film electrician who loves to take photos tirelessly, while finding time on the side to create maps in various mediums (a long-standing hobby, starting with his 3-d topographical map of his hometown, Tübingen, Germany in elementary school).
Together, Whitney's big picture ideas and Sam's impeccable attention to detail, they pull prints in a print shop or set-up a makeshift photography studio. They love to generate ideas and find ways to execute them.
The Romeo and Juliet Code is the story of a young English girl who is sent to live with her American relatives in Maine during World War II. It's a story with a little romance and a lot of mystery.
The cover is a photograph from Kate Powers Photography and although it has a very modern tone, I enjoyed trying to evoke the historical aspects of this book with the bottle cap type treatment and a polka-dotted book jacket and case.
Romeo Blue is the sequel to The Romeo and Juliet Code, and for this cover I wanted to keep the summery and playful feel of the first book. This cover is composed of photos from Kenji Iwai for Getty and EasyBuy4u for iStockphoto.
I love the overall look of the jacket so much that I wanted to include that here too! Making a jacket that adds to the story and really plays up elements from the cover is one of my favorite things to do.
